Inland Pier

It was the country’s only inland pier, a concrete scar across medieval stones. An intended fly-over built by accident, they said, before planners realised ancient views would die upon completion. Construction stopped mid-air and the tarmac sprouted weeds and flowers. The barbed wire was no barrier to inquisition. Teenage lovers hid, smokers smoked and winos drank. Some like Julie did all three.

Inland Pier (237 words) was completed in May 2015. It was short listed in the Ink Tears Flash Fiction competition. It was accepted by Rattle Tales for performance on 11 Feb 2016.
